Samsung Electronics will develop artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and nurture AI experts in collaboration with Seoul National University, with a particular focus on strengthening research on on-device AI for its Galaxy mobile devices, the company said Monday.
Samsung said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Seoul National University on Monday to establish a joint AI research center.
As part of this agreement, researchers from Samsung’s device experience division will collaborate with students from Seoul National University’s College of Engineering on industry-academia research projects related to the latest AI technologies over the next three years, the company said.
Specifically, the two sides will aim to secure technologies for on-device AI, which enables AI functions to be performed within a device even when it’s not connected, and multi-modal AI, a technology that processes various types of data such as text, images, voice and video together.
Samsung has incorporated various AI technologies such as Circle to Search, real-time translation and Photo Assist into its latest flagship smartphone Galaxy S24 series, and is expanding its product lineup with AI features such as Bespoke AI home appliances and AI TVs.
Seoul National University has also been operating an interdisciplinary program in artificial intelligence at its graduate school of engineering since the second semester of 2020, with the goal of nurturing AI professionals.
Samsung expects that through this industry-academia collaboration with Seoul National University, it can secure core technologies for the rapidly evolving AI sector and strengthen its technological competitiveness. The company also plans to pursue recruitment activities targeting outstanding master’s and doctoral students of the school who will join the research project to secure more AI professionals.
“Through the agreement to establish a joint AI research center with Seoul National University, we expect Samsung Electronics to solidify its technological and product competitiveness in the AI sector and contribute to securing outstanding professionals in future AI research areas,” said Cheun Kyung-whoon, chief technology officer of the device experience division at Samsung Electronics and head of Samsung Research.
