German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz regained its position as the largest seller of imported cars in Korea last month, surpassing the previous leader BMW, industry data showed Tuesday.
The number of newly registered imported cars came to 21,560 units in April, up 3.1 percent from 20,910 units a year ago, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association.
But the figure represented a 14.7 percent decrease from March, when 25,263 units were newly registered.
Mercedes-Benz was the top foreign car brand in terms of sales last month, selling 6,683 units, thanks to the resolution of a supply disruption caused by tensions surrounding the Red Sea earlier this year.
BMW, which had held the top spot for the first three months of this year, finished second with 5,750 units, while Tesla dropped one notch to third with 1,722 units sold.
Volvo, Lexus and Toyota sold 1,210, 920 and 893 units, respectively.
Of last month’s import sales, hybrid models accounted for the biggest share of 11,177 units, followed by gasoline and electric models with 5,536 and 3,626 units, respectively.
By model, Mercedes-Benz’s E-class was the bestseller in April with 2,081 units sold, trailed by Tesla’s Model 3 with 1,716 units, BMW’s 5 Series with 1,556 units and Mercedes-Benz’s C-class with 951 units.
