Industry ministry holds food exhibition to promote exports

SEOUL, June 11 – The industry ministry kicked off an annual food exhibition Tuesday as part of efforts to achieve a target of US$10 billion in food exports this year.

The four-day Seoul Food 2024 will run in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul, through Friday, attracting 1,605 businesses from 52 countries, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The ministry said it plans to secure export deals worth $150 million during the event, up 25 percent from the previous year, by inviting major retailers from the United States, Thailand and China.

The ministry added it will focus on finding new products with growth potential, including plant-based meat products, meal kits and traditional snacks, following the success of frozen gimbap, or seaweed rice rolls, during last year’s event.

“South Korea’s industry and agriculture ministries plan to offer support, including marketing, retail, logistics and certifications, to foster the food industry,” Trade Minister Cheong In-kyo said.
