ICT exports jump nearly 34 pct in April

SEOUL, May 15 – South Korea’s exports of information and communication technology (ICT) products soared almost 34 percent in April, logging the sixth consecutive month of increase, on robust global demand, data showed Wednesday.

Outbound shipments of ICT products came to US$17.08 billion last month, up 33.8 percent from $12.77 billion a year earlier, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The country’s ICT imports increased 10.4 percent on-year to $11.56 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $5.52 billion in the sector.

By item, chip exports surged 53.9 percent on-year to $9.96 billion last month on the recovery of the global chip demand thanks to the growth of the artificial intelligence market and higher IT device sales.

It was the sixth straight month the chip export tally posted a double-digit increase.

In detail, exports of memory chips shot up 98.7 percent on-year to $5.82 billion as the average quarterly price of 8-gigabit DRAM continued to increase and on the brisk demand for high-value products like high-bandwidth memory chips.

Exports of system chips increased for the fourth consecutive month to $3.7 billion, up 18.5 percent from a year ago.

Overseas sales of displays climbed 15.2 percent to $1.64 billion, posting a double-digit increase for the third straight month, thanks to higher demand for organic light-emitting diodes and liquid-crystal display panels for televisions and personal computers.

Exports of computers and peripherals advanced 55.9 percent to $910 million, marking the fourth consecutive month of increase, mainly driven by a 107 percent increase in sales of solid state drives.

Outbound shipments of mobile phones also gained 15.3 percent to $930 million, but exports of communications equipment dropped 3.5 percent to $190 million.

By nation, combined shipments to China and Hong Kong jumped 43.7 percent on-year to $7.34 billion last month, logging a gain for the sixth consecutive month, mainly thanks to an increase in display exports.

Exports to Vietnam went up 22.4 percent to $2.69 billion on higher demand for semiconductors and displays, and exports to the United States expanded 24.6 percent to $2 billion with stronger demand for chips for servers and data centers, as well as computers.

Exports to the European Union grew 15.5 percent to $980 million also on chips and computers, and outbound shipments to Japan rose 9.1 percent to $300 million on computers and batteries, marking a turnaround from a 24.5 percent decrease in March.
